BMG LABTECH has been committed to producing microplate readers for more than 25 years. By focusing on the needs of the scientific community, the company’s innovative microplate readers have earned the company the reputation of being a technology leader in the field. BMG LABTECH has developed a wide range of dedicated and multi-mode microplate readers for life sciences applications and high-throughput screening.

All BMG LABTECH microplate readers are “Made in Germany” and are conceived, developed, assembled, and tested entirely at our headquarters in Ortenberg, Germany.

Since our establishment in Offenburg, Germany in 1989, BMG LABTECH has expanded to offer a worldwide sales and support network with offices in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, and France. Our subsidiaries, regional offices, and distributors are committed to bringing innovative microplate reader technology with the quality and reliability you expect from a German company.

Our steadily growing workforce includes engineers, software programmers, and scientists from the fields of physics, biology, biochemistry, and analytical chemistry. The rising number of employees is paralleled by the continuous growth of the company. By the end of this year, a €4.5 million expansion that will double the surface of the facilities at headquarters will be completed. The main beneficiaries of this expansion will be the production, research and development, and technical support divisions.

“As BMG LABTECH has been continuously growing over the past years, this major site expansion ensures that we will further continue to meet our customer needs in the future through the development of new technologies and new readers,” said Thomas Räbiger, the company CEO.

Markets Served

The main customer industries are pharmaceutical industries and CROs specially focused on drug discovery and high-throughput screening, as well as the biotech industry and academic research institutes with research areas including life science, biochemistry, biotechnology, neuroscience, and cell biology.

Capabilities

Our microplate readers range from single-detection-mode plate readers up to multi-mode readers with up to seven detection modes, and cover every segment from entry-level up to high-end screening-dedicated readers.

BMG LABTECH plate readers earned themselves a reputation for being sturdy and robust instruments. Proof for this is the number of readers that were installed in the 90s and early 00s and that are still in use in several labs.

Besides robustness, we offer with the PHERAstar FSX® and the CLARIOstar® the two most sensitive readers currently on the market, in their respective category.

For the CLARIOstar, we developed and patented a new revolutionary monochromator technology, the LVF Monochromator™. Unlike conventional monochromators, this technology does not rely on diffraction grating, thus yielding increased light transmission.

Another unique feature is the ability to run oxygen gas rampings through the use of our Atmospheric Control Unit (ACU). This is especially useful to mimic disease-like conditions such as ischemia/reperfusion or tumor hypoxia in the reader.

The PHERAstar FSX is considered the go-to reader in the HTS community thanks to its sensitivity, speed, and precision. In particular for TR-FRET measurements, this reader delivers robust data with very fast reading times (e.g., 36 seconds for an on-the-fly detection of a 1536-well plate).

Technologies

LVF Monochromators

Revolutionary next-generation monochromator technology with filter-like performance. Our patented Linear Variable Filter (LVF) Monochromator technology was specifically engineered for the CLARIOstar. In LVF Monochromators, the light signal passes through two linear filter slides, which by sliding along each other, select a specific wavelength and bandwidth. The Linear Variable Dichroic Mirror (LVDM) slide is a unique feature of this system and is used to separate the excitation from the emission light.

UV/Vis Spectrometer

The UV/vis spectrometer collects the entire absorbance spectrum instead of a specific wavelength. BMG LABTECH was the first plate reader manufacturer to equip their microplate reader with a UV/vis spectrometer for full spectrum absorbance measurements. Our fast, powerful spectrometer allows measuring a full absorbance spectrum (220–1000 nm) in less than 1 second/well.

ACU (Atmospheric Control Unit)

The Atmospheric Control Unit is available for the CLARIOstar and Omega series, and is the ideal solution for live-cell-based applications, from standard cell growth to pH control. It provides a complete solution to independently regulate both O2 and CO2 gas levels within the microplate reader and offers, in combination with temperature control, shaking options, and bottom reading detection, a versatile walk-away solution for long-term cell-based assays.

As a unique feature, the CLARIOstar with ACU offers the capability to run gas ramps. For instance, the ACU can decrease O2 levels and then rapidly re-oxygenate back to physiological conditions, while keeping steady CO2 levels. Thanks to this capability, disease models such as ischemia/reperfusion can be reproduced in vitro in the plate reader.
