Mighty Microbes

  • Large image collection
  • Some images don't magnify well
Platform:   iPad
Cost:   $2.99

For people who are fascinated with pathogens, the Mighty Microbes app is a digital playground. Containing 489 images in its collection (most of which were acquired by electron microscopy), this app allows users to come up close and personal with harmful viruses, bacteria, fungi, and protozoans. The images are of high quality and display nicely on the iPad, although I did find that many of them were not high enough resolution to render the “zoom in” function very useful. However, that limitation aside, this app still contains plenty of eye candy. Each image is accompanied by the scientific and common names of the organism that is imaged, as well as the method of image acquisition. Users can add images to a “favorites” folder, and can also choose to view the images in “slideshow mode” (which displays the image full-screen, without any description).
