GC Calculator

Behold, the GC Calculator app harnesses the power of gas chromatography into the palm of your hand! (OK, that may be a bit dramatic—it is more accurate to say that this app allows you to harness the power of correct calibration of your gas chromatograph. Still, it’s a pretty nifty tool.) With the GC Calculator app, researchers who use gas chromatography (GC) or GC/MS can be sure that their system is running at its best. By inputting parameters such as column length, carrier gas, outlet flow, and column temperature, users can see how various conditions affect column flow and pressure (and can set up their systems appropriately). Under the settings tab, users can choose to display pressure in one of three units (psi, KPa, and bar). The information tab not only provides examples of the app’s utility (such as calculating new parameters when switching to a different carrier gas), but it also offers a comprehensive “how-to” for the app.

Scientifically Studying Ecstasy

MDMA (commonly known as the empathogen “ecstasy”) is classified as a Schedule 1 drug, which is reserved for compounds with no accepted medical use and a high abuse potential. Two researchers from Stanford, however, call for a rigorous scientific exploration of MDMA's effects to identify precisely how the drug works, the data from which could be used to develop therapeutic compounds.

Do you agree that ecstasy should be studied for its potential therapeutic benefits?
