  • Great design
  • Some commercial content
Platform: iPad/iPhone
Cost: Free

With its CloningBench app, Invitrogen does a nice job restricting the commercial content to only a few sections of the app, while providing a number of useful tools to the average molecular biologist (regardless of whether he/she uses Invitrogen products). The restriction enzyme tool allows researchers to search by cut-site, name, or buffer. There is also a double digest tool. The majority of the app consists of molecular biology calculators. While many calculations are fairly simple (and, in all honesty, should be able to be done in one’s head), the app is certainly useful for those I’m-too-lazy-for-mental-math moments. Calculators are provided for nucleic acid concentration, bacterial growth, molar quantities, PCR MasterMixes, and insert-to-vector molar ratios. The app has a sleek design that nicely applies touch-screen technology. (For instance, enzyme names are selected from a scrolling wheel, rather than manually typed.)
