ZFIN: The Zebrafish Model Organism Database

zfin.org
  • Nice organization, many different resources for researchers
  • None

When scientific acronyms no longer need to mean anything at all, you get ZFIN (for Zebrafish Model Organism Database?). No, no, I kid—ZFIN stands for ZebraFish Information Network, and for that I applaud the University of Oregon for succeeding in finding an acronym that is both apt and not (too) contrived. The ZFIN crew also succeeds at putting together a nicely organized, informational website about this important genetic model. Researchers can find guidelines for zebrafish nomenclature, search gene-expression data, and locate mutant/morphant/transgenic lines. There is an anatomical ontology browser, a protocols wiki, and links to genomic resources. In case you do manage to find an aspect of the site that needs improvement, you can take the user survey to “help build a better ZFIN.”
