Microarray data is to gene expression what genomic sequences are to molecular biology—a wonderful collection of information to have, but where, or how, does one start analyzing it? Fortunately, the computer is the best friend of anyone wanting to do wholesale analysis of these datasets. Enter L2L, which provides software tools for comparing published data to a user’s input microarray results. Requiring only a Web browser and a list of probes that went up or down in an experiment, L2L helps users identify patterns in their data. Access is fairly simple, though instructions are a bit more complicated than they need to be. The number of datasets available for comparison is impressive and the site is freely accessible without registration. If you’re looking for a way to wade through your results, hot off the microarray, this is a must-see site.

Scientifically Studying Ecstasy

MDMA (commonly known as the empathogen “ecstasy”) is classified as a Schedule 1 drug, which is reserved for compounds with no accepted medical use and a high abuse potential. Two researchers from Stanford, however, call for a rigorous scientific exploration of MDMA's effects to identify precisely how the drug works, the data from which could be used to develop therapeutic compounds.
